Personally, I would never use a flash for shooting flowers or static subjects. Then use the standard light/distance method mentioned above. This will be about as 'black' as you will get. Get a thin hard board.and cover it with some really fine, high quality velvet. Don't use ART card as it won't be very black and will reflect light back at the camera. IF you are not going to use the pp approach.then I would ensure that you make a backdrop (say for shooting flowers).that is as jet-black as possible.

Yes, there are other methods.than full 'subject extraction' and then plonking in a jet-black layer behind.like adjusting the black point down to zero, etc.however, often this will effect the entire image.so it's not the best route. To obtain that 'jet black' background (ie: 0, 0, 0, ).which is the absence of ALL light.one really needs to do it in post production. You would probably find most black backgrounds to be in the 15,15,15 range. However, IF you actually go back and look at a lot of 1970's era magazines.and browse the still-life shots, etc.you will soon notice that the majority of 'back backgrounds' were NOT actually 'jet' black at all.but merely a dark shade of grey. In the old days (before pp).the approach was to make sure that the light falling on the background was at least twice the distance from the subject being photographed.
